Valve Certification and Market Access: EU, US and China
Nine out of ten export problems are not “we cannot test it” — they are the right test against the wrong regime. The same ball valve needs endurance and bending moment to EN 331 for Germany, NSF/ANSI 61 extraction before it can touch US drinking water, and a TSG D7002 type test for China. The three regimes do not substitute for each other, and the report fields do not line up.
This cluster is organised as market → regulation → product standard → test difference: answer “can we sell it” first, then “how do we test it”.
1. Three markets, three gates
| Market | Regulatory gate | Product standards (how to test) | Most-often-missed item |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU | PED 2014/68/EU categorisation + CE marking; gas appliance and construction products directives | EN 12266-1 (methods), EN 331 (domestic gas), EN 13774 (gas distribution), EN 1074 (water supply), EN 13828 (potable water ball valves), EN 1567 (PRVs) | PED category follows PS×DN and fluid group, not size |
| US | No single admission certificate, but drinking-water wetted parts need NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 | API 6D, API 598, ASME B16.34, AWWA C515/C509 | Shell multipliers and rounding differ from EN (2.5× vs 1.5×) |
| China | Special equipment manufacturing licence + TSG D7002-2023 type test | GB/T 13927-2022, GB/T 26479, GB/T 24925 | Type-test coverage has hard boundaries by construction |
Read the table as one sentence: regulation decides whether it can be sold, product standards decide how to test, hygiene and environmental rules decide whether it can touch the medium. They are parallel, not sequential — many projects obtain CE first and only then learn the wetted parts also need NSF, costing a full round.
2. Find the article by market

- Exporting to the EU: PED 2014/68/EU categories, modules and CE marking
- EN 12266-1: P10, P11, P12 and leakage rates A to G
- EN 331 domestic gas ball valves: DN bands, endurance, torque and bending moment
- EN 13774 gas distribution valves: the 6 mbar tier and three temperatures
- EN 1074 water supply valves: PFA/PMA/PEA and eleven type tests
- EN 13828 potable water ball valves: the 2025 edition’s thirteen checks and dezincification limit
- EN 1567 building PRVs: the outlet curve and 0.1 MPa creep
- EN 1111:2026, EN 1287:2026 and NHS D08: what changed
US: API/ASME/AWWA and the hygiene gate
- NSF/ANSI 61 and 372: the two US drinking-water gates — 61 is extraction, 372 is content
- ASME B16.34: Class 150 is not 150 psi — and test pressure rounds up to 25 psi
- AWWA C515 and C509: four proof-of-design tests — 2.5× shell, one tier above EN
- API 6D pipeline valves: pressure, seat and special tests in the 25th edition
- API 598 versus GB/T 13927: why the same valve gives two results
- WaterSense shower testing: specification, pressure conditions, equipment limits
China: type testing and national standards
- Type testing: items, sampling and coverage under TSG D7002-2023
- GB/T 13927-2022: shell, seat and the judgement method
- Fire testing: ISO 10497 and API 607, with GB/T 26479 as the domestic reference
- GB/T 17213.10 and valve testing: check the scope before specifying equipment
Cross-system comparison and the master index
- Valve test standards index: GB/T, ISO, API and EN in one table — that page indexes by standard number, this cluster by test item
- How to choose valve testing equipment: test type, pressure tier, acceptance clause
- Selecting test equipment for valves, HVAC, sanitary and automotive parts
- ISO 9001 certification covering industrial automation equipment manufacturing
3. Four misjudgements
Treating CE as a quality certificate. CE is a declaration of regulatory conformity, based on the PED category and the applicable module (A, G, B+C and so on). Get the category wrong and the marking is void. The inputs are PS×DN and fluid group, not nominal size.
Assuming NSF 61 covers 372. 61 measures what leaches into water after a 14-day soak; 372 measures lead content by wetted-surface weighting (average ≤0.25%). One governs extraction, the other formulation, and a material change restarts both.
Sending one report to three markets. EN shell is 1.5×; AWWA water valves are 2.5×. That is a 40% difference in test pressure, and a customer retest will find it.
Overstating type-test coverage. TSG D7002 coverage is banded by construction, class, temperature range and size. Covering butterfly valves with a ball valve result, or metal seats with a soft-seat result, is rejected.
4. Equipment and documents together
Half of a certification project is bench capability; the other half is traceable records: which rating the test pressure was derived from, hold time, medium temperature, instrument calibration validity, and the clause the criterion came from. An auditor is not looking at how good your bench is — only at whether those fields reconcile.
- Valve pressure test machine — shell 1.5×, seat 1.1×, report per valve
- Valve comprehensive test bench — one frame for type-test sample allocation
- Calibrating flow and Δp instruments: certificates, ranges, traceability
Continue by test item
These clusters are grouped by test item rather than by standard number. The other four:
- Pressure and tightness — shell, seat and air tightness
- Flow and control performance — Cv/Kv, PRVs and TMVs
- Life, torque and fatigue — fix the conditions first
- Special and safety tests — fire, cryogenic, emissions, type test
Not sure about the test pressure yet? Use the valve test scope configurator — pick valve, size, class and standard, and it returns shell and seat pressures, hold time and a bench list you can email.
Related test equipment
Each test above maps to a bench. Pick by valve type and by the item you need to prove:
- Valve pressure test machine — shell at 1.5x and seat at 1.1x, with a report per valve
- Valve comprehensive test bench — pressure, tightness, flow, torque and life cycling on one clamping system
- Valve testing equipment range — browse all models by valve type and test item
